In early March 2025, HMNZS Canterbury headed into the Southern Ocean with 20 BLAKE Expeditions participants aboard.

The crew of scientists, students, and teachers from Aotearoa journeyed toward the remote Auckland and Campbell islands on a 10-day scientific mission in the region where Sir Peter Blake had observed significant environmental changes during his global voyages over two decades ago.

This remote area encircling Antarctica serves as an important indicator of our planet’s changing climate, and the field work carried out this year ranged from invertebrate studies, to kelp and rock sampling, to peat coring.

Understanding ecological shifts through research while connecting students with real-world climate science beyond their classrooms is a key part of BLAKE Expeditions.

“We want to restart people caring about the environment … through adventure, through participation, through education and through enjoyment.” – Sir Peter Blake.

We’re excited to have the video ready to show. Enjoy!!
