Stella Fish

University of Otago

Stella is a second-year undergraduate student at the University of Otago studying Ecology and Marine Science. She attended BLAKE Inspire in 2019 where she found her passion for the unique environment of Aotearoa and its conservation. She has a particular interest in the changing ecology of New Zealand, especially in regards to climate change. This summer she had a studentship with the Marine Department of Otago University where she assisted on an Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture system with work on culturing Macrocystis pyrifera. Through this, she has been participating in fieldwork for this study and others and working on sample preparation for isotopic analysis. She has also been helping with flume experiments, all looking at improving and understanding sustainability in New Zealand species aquaculture.

Stella is on the Dunedin Chiasma team for 2021 where she will be helping to connect STEM students to the industry of their interest through her role on the marketing team. She has also volunteered throughout high school and university, from pest control on Maungawhau, to being involved in her high school sustainability and conservation team. She also has done duck banding to help population research, weed control with AAPES (the Otago University Environmental Club) and helping at the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital over the summer.
