GNS Science, Te Pū Ao, is New Zealand’s leading provider of Earth, geoscience and isotope research and consultancy services. Its purpose is to understand natural Earth system processes and resources, and to translate these into economic, environmental and social benefits.

Through BLAKE’s partnership with GNS Science, this year one young New Zealander will be given the opportunity to take part in the Lakes380 programme.

Lakes380—Our Lakes’ Health: past, present, future is a five-year research project that will enrich our understanding of the environmental, social and cultural histories of 10% of New Zealand’s 3,800 lakes.

This involves collecting and analysing lake sediments and water samples in some of the most remote lakes in New Zealand.

Currently, approximately 200 lakes are monitored with data spanning 30 years or less. Capturing 1000 years of lake history will contribute new knowledge to ensure our lakes are valued and protected – now and for generations to come.

Further information about the 2021/22 programme is oulined below.
